No fuss protein bars.
Well after a disastrous start to the spring for a big part of England, though luckily we missed it all in London, the weather has certainly turned and it looks like summer is on the way. We have had a few really warm day’s, the kind where I have to go out in the afternoon as out west-facing flat heats up and slowly roasts me. With a bit of sunshine coming on I’ve started thinking about getting in shape and losing a bit of tummy, ready for the approaching summer. With that in mind as well as lots of exercise, I have also started making homemade protein bars, perfect for breakfast or snacks on the go!
Last minute edible presents for your mum, gran or a special lady.
It’s mothers day tomorrow and there are probably still a few of us out there who are getting ready to pop back home or to the in-laws tomorrow and have just realised they have forgotten to get a present for their mother or mother in law. Thankfully Hana is a bit more organised than I am and there is a little gift sitting in a bag ready to go back with us to Hertfordshire tomorrow, so I don’t need to panic about getting or making something. For me this will be a bit of an odd mothers day as it is the first after my gran passed away back in June of last year, really having raised me from the age of nine she was as much a mother as a grandmother and so I guess it feels like there is a bit of a space this year to be filled. Luckily through we will be visiting Hana’s family so there will still be a nice day to look forward to. In the mean time, if you are stuck for a last minute present I have made a few really nice edible gifts over the past few years I’ve been doing this blog and thought I’d share a few of them with you. We had this for dinner last night and I had to share it with you. Mackerel pasta is a really great dinner recipe and best of all it is simple, quick and easy to make; perfect for those evenings when you want a really lovely dinner but it’s also a little late and you don’t have too much energy left. You can almost make it in the time it takes to boil the pasta but be prepared as this is a dry pasta, there is almost not sauce, save for a little reserved pasta water to help lubricate the pasta and sauce.
As I said we had this last night, once I eventually got back from the gym and supermarket so it was a little late when I started making this delish pasta. One thing I like about Nigella Lawson’s pasta recipes is that you can generally bang them out in next to no time. We have had this recipe before and last time around I didn’t use the Marsala wine as it felt a little indulgent to buy a whole bottle of it for one recipe. This time I bit the bullet and got a bottle (£4.99 from Morrisons) and after trying it again I think it made a real difference to the dish. Yes you can substitute it with a little red wine or even vermouth if you have it, but the marsala really adds to the nutty, earthy taste of the dish and I think it does need it. Besides it’s not too expensive and you can always have a little glass with dessert!
