A very cheap but cheerful homemade pizza.
Back on Tuesday, Day two of the budget week I mentioned that I had a lovely budget homemade pizza. When I think about how much we can spend on a takeaway pizza night from Domino’s it seems crazy compared to this weeks budget challenge. It’s a meal which end’s up costing around £20 for the two large pizza’s we have, as well as any side dishes and cola etc. That’s this whole weeks budget in one single meal. Okay there is sometimes enough left for Hana to have a packed lunch the next day (sometimes) but still it starts to seem crazy when you look at it from this perspective.
I wanted a pizza night whilst Hana was out, but even getting a frozen one was out of the question during the budget challenge. So it was time to make my own pizza from start to finish. I’ve kind of made pizza before. In that I cheated and bought a ready made base, but not today.
So homemade budget pizza with cost of ingredients, I think you’ll be surprised how cheap it was to make!
Budget Ham and Mushroom Pizza
375g value flour – 18p
1tsp caster sugar – <5p
packet yeast – 12p
2tbsp olive oil – 10p
225ml warm water
1/2 jar pasata – 50p
2 large mushrooms – 10p
sliced courgette – <5p
2 slices of ham – 12p
cheese – 5p
Total cost of pizza for two (half for Hana’s lunch tomorrow) £1.28sp salt
In a mixing bowl, sift the flour, caster sugar, salt and yeast. Stir everything together then add the warm water and the oil.
Begin mixing with a spoon till it starts to come together, then switch to using your hands. You’ll need to kneed it for a few minutes, just the same as if you were baking bread. Essentially that’s what you are doing.
Stretch the dough into a pizza tin, or in my case a baking tray.
Top with the pasata to begin with. Thinly slice the mushrooms and courgette and spread over the top of the pizza. Chop the ham and spread that out as well. Grate the cheese over the pizza so it looks like it does below.
This serves two people as a main with a side dish. I served it with tabouleh but you could make home made chips which would be pretty cheap to have. I was really please I managed to make this for so little. As I said before, it makes you think……
